Mets clobber Nationals behind huge third inning
Baseball Betting Lines
08/14/2008 -
Washington, DC (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Daniel Murphy clubbed a two-run homer and
added an RBI single, as the New York Mets -- aided by an eight-run third
inning -- cruised to a 12-0 win in the second test of a three-game series
against the Washington Nationals.
Fernando Tatis homered and drove in two runs for the Mets, who have won two
games in a row and five of seven overall. Carlos Beltran had a two-run double.
John Maine (10-7), who was activated from the 15-day disabled list before the
game, allowed just one hit while walking four and striking out six over five
innings to pick up the win. Maine was placed on the DL on August 3,
retroactive to July 29, with a mild strain of his right rotator cuff.
"I felt better than I have the last couple of weeks," Maine said. "I went out
there and did just enough. It's easier to pitch when you got that kind of lead
because your not really concerned about what's going on, you just try to get
outs and get back into that groove."
Brian Stokes tossed the final four innings to notch the first save of his
career.
Lastings Milledge had one of the Nationals four hits and is now riding a
career-high 14-game hitting streak.
Jason Bergmann (2-9) took the loss after he was tattooed for 10 runs -- six
earned -- on eight hits in just three innings of work for Washington, losers
of six straight. The right-hander also walked six and struck out one.
Jose Reyes singled to open the game, scampered to third on a base hit by
Argenis Reyes and waltzed home on David Wright's sacrifice fly. The Mets
stretched their advantage further in the second when Tatis led off the frame
by depositing a Bergmann offering into the left field seats for his 10th home
run of the season.
The Mets blew the game wide-open with an eight-run surge in the third. Wright
reached on an infield single and Carlos Delgado walked to begin the inning.
One out later, Murphy and Tatis ripped consecutive RBI singles. Bergmann then
issued back-to-back walks to Brian Schneider and Maine to force in another
run.
A fielding error by Cristian Guzman on a bouncer from Jose Reyes allowed Tatis
and Schneider to cross the plate. After Argenis Reyes went down swinging, a
generous Bergmann handed out free passes to Wright and Delgado, which allowed
Maine to trot home, before Beltran's two-run double capped the barrage and
gave the visitors a comfortable 10-run cushion.
Murphy's two-run homer in the fifth made it a 12-0 game.

Owens broke the bone leading to his right ring finger Sunday night and had a plate surgically attached to it Monday. Owens did not speak with reporters Wednesday, but said Sunday he'd be out two to four weeks. A return against the Titans would be 13 days after the surgery. The Cowboys were listed as an early -7 1/2 favorite vs. the Tennessee Titans for Week 4 at MySportsbook.com

Mayweather picked to beat De La Hoya
LAS VEGAS, NEVADA -- Golden Boy Oscar De La Hoya and his rival Floyd Mayweather Jr. arrived at the MGM Grand here Wednesday amid the pomp and pandemonium befitting two of the biggest stars in the sport who are about to duke it out for the WBC super welterweight crown this Saturday (Sunday in Manila).
As of Wednesday, MySportsbook.com closed its book with Mayweather a favorite to defeat De La Hoya at -170 (a $100 bet wins $70), while De La Hoya is a +140 underdog (a $100 bet wins $140).
Mayweather arrived at about 11:30 a.m. on a big truck with his face and a big "World's Best Pound-for-Pound" sign scribbled across the vehicle. He was accompanied by his entourage made up of rappers and his training team.
A crowd of close to 3,000 eager fans packed the MGM Grand lobby, with their cameras in tow, all trying to vie for position to get a good angle at Mayweather, who is acknowledged as the world's best fighter pound-for-pound.
Eric Gomez, Golden Boy Promotions vice-president, described the fan turnout as "amazing" and swore he had never seen anything quite like this event.
"The crowd was fantastic. Everybody was just too eager to see the two fighters," said ALA manager Michael Aldeguer, who was among those who waited at the lobby together with his ward Rey "Boom Boom" Bautista and AJ Banal.
De La Hoya made his own grand entrance at the hotel lobby at around 12:30 p.m. accompanied by GBP chief executive officer Richard Schaefer and trainer Freddie Roach.
The same group of fans who trooped to see Mayweather also lingered around to get a close look at De La Hoya, who has been secretly working out at a Las Vegas gym for days after arriving from his main training camp in Puerto Rico.
The golden boy then took part in a closed-door afternoon workout with Bautista and Banal. The two, along with Aldeguer and wife Christine, as well as an HBO crew were the only ones allowed inside the gym.
De La Hoya and Mayweather take part in today's final press conference before the official weigh-in this Friday.
Ring Magazine, the acknowledged bible of boxing, reported in its June 2007 issue that 12 out of 20 boxing experts it interviewed have favored Mayweather to defeat De la Hoya, with only 8 favoring the latter.
But Filipino ring icon Manny Pacquiao said in a recent interview with The Freeman's Emmanuel Villaruel that De La Hoya will win by unanimous decision over Mayweather.
